Sustainability
Sustainability is the capacity to maintain, support or endure. A sustainable development is defined as a development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. There are three factors that support sustainability, which are economy, society and environment. The key to achieve sustainability is to balance local and global efforts to meet basic human needs by preserving the environment; without destroying or degrading the natural environment. Every action that is to be taken in the present has to be thought of carefully and the long-term impacts have to be calculated so that the present generations do not jeopardize the ability of future generations to survive.
The present challenge is to maintain, even further improve the standard of living while reducing the impact on our environment and finite resources. Efficient use of energy leads to resource efficiency, which is the first step towards achieving sustainability. Hence, sustainable approaches are more common nowadays in the construction industry.
There are two main areas of concern for residential and commercial buildings in achieving sustainability, which are suitable design and material of construction. The suitable design needs to incorporate the use of passive building design that takes advantage of the climate to maintain a comfortable environment in the building. The suitable construction materials refer to the sustainable materials that do not impact negatively on non-renewable resources, the natural environment or human health.
These long lasting products will also have an effect on the overall building’s efficiency:
- Good thermal properties: products need to be able to prevent temperature fluctuation inside a building. Ideally, heat needs to be kept in the building in winter and kept outside of the building in summer. This will significantly reduce the need for extensive heating and cooling and thus reduces energy bills. In addition, reduction in the use of appliances such as air conditioner and heater will create a healthier room environment and stable room climate. Stable temperature promotes sustainability to people’s health as well as the environment.
- Positive benefits on occupants’ health and well-being: strong and durable products can enhance the acoustic properties of a building. The use of products with good noise attenuation property will greatly reduce the transmission of unwanted sound from the outside. Consequently, the soundproofed building’s occupants will experience improved mood, reduction in stress level, better quality of sleep and productive working environments. In addition, soundproofing will improve privacy of the family members and friends inside the house, sustaining health and healthy relationships.
- Sustainable investments: précised and careful installation of the products will minimise the risk of damage to your property and assets in your property. In addition, maintenance and repair costs can be reduced, which means greater savings for the customers. Sustainable planning prior to construction or refurbishment projects will lead to middle and long-term savings and increased resale value of your property.
